Urgency in the U.S. ELECTIONS

I have felt strongly about presidential elections before, most recently the elections of 2004 and the one in 2000, but THIS election really has me on pins and needles.

So, I am urging all of you Americans to go out and vote - for OBAMA!

The United States cannot take MORE mismanagement, MORE wasteful spending, and MORE OF THE SAME at the hands of the Republican Party. And just the thought of the inexperienced and ill-informed Sarah Palin possibly at the helm one day in the next four years makes me shudder.

After living outside the United States for a year now, I do know one thing: if the rest of the world could elect the US President, OBAMA would win by a landslide! Do you think there's something that the rest of the world knows that many Americans don't?

TOP 5 REASONS OBAMA SUPPORTERS SHOULDN'T REST EASY

1. The polls may be wrong. This is an unprecedented election. No one knows how racism may affect what voters tell pollsters—or what they do in the voting booth. And the polls are narrowing anyway. In the last few days, John McCain has gained ground in most national polls, as his campaign has gone even more negative.

2. Dirty tricks. Republicans are already illegally purging voters from the rolls in some states. They're whipping up hysteria over ACORN to justify more challenges to new voters. Misleading flyers about the voting process have started appearing in black neighborhoods. And of course, many counties still use unsecure voting machines.

3. October surprise. In politics, 15 days is a long time. The next McCain smear could dominate the news for a week. There could be a crisis with Iran, or Bin Laden could release another tape, or worse.

4. Those who forget history... In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote after trailing by seven points in the final days of the race. In 1980, Reagan was eight points down in the polls in late October and came back to win. Races can shift—fast!

5. Landslide. Even with Barack Obama in the White House, passing universal health care and a new clean-energy policy is going to be hard. Insurance, drug and oil companies will fight us every step of the way. We need the kind of landslide that will give Barack a huge mandate.

I have voted in every election since I have been old enough to vote. In 2000 and again in 2004, I felt that my vote did not count. More than ever before in history, there is a sense of urgency about this election.

VOTE DEMOCRATIC!

  1. Sigh... I finally have to comment. & I'll apologize that it's on yours... it's just the timing. Please read to the end before getting too mad at me lol

For months my husband & I were going McCain. We're conservative... not crazily so, but still.. We're Catholic it's ingrained in us lol.

For months I've read blogs bashing him... (of course I've heard crap against Obama too, there's no way you can miss that) and I'd get so annoyed. At first it was because a lot of what I was reading was against or aimed at my personal beliefs on an issue... but the farther we got into the campaign it became because I wasn't liking where McCain was going either but I'm stubborn and I hated agreeing w/ the people bashing him lol.

I'd pretty much stopped watching debates and reading up on stuff.. because I couldn't hold my own in discussing it anymore lol... Head in sand syndrom.

A few days ago I got a call from my husband while he was at work. He went through a list of reasons why he had decided that he was going to have to vote for Obama. Honestly I was shocked. He's made peace w/ the decision and I'm happy for him.

Me on the other hand... I see why he's doing it... and I agree with him. Every point he made is right... But I can't get my conscience past that one issue. I have no idea what I'm going to do and I now have about a day to decide because we're voting on Friday. :-S

  2. I've been following this election more closely than the one in 2004. I believe that one was stolen and I have strong suspicions the Republicans are trying to steal this one and Allah knows best.

  3. Susie I'm in Kuwait and was too late to get the absentee ballot. Next week I'm flying back to Fl. to vote. My votes didn't count in 2000 & 2004 either. I just cannot understand why the hispanic population in south fl vote repub. ( shrug)

  4. Susie,

I enjoy your blog and appreciate your candor but I think you're at a remove and are probably seeing things through a different lens than here at home.

    1. The polls are wrong but not because of racism or negativity. Obama erred very badly with his "spread the wealth around" and it's hurting him. Badly. Also, the major polling companies are all deeply in blue states which gives them sampling errors that favor Democrats. There is also the Bradley Effect. YMMV.
    2. ACORN has been raided by the FBI in several states. Election officials reviewed 2100 ballots in Ohio submitted by Acorn. *All* of them were fraudulent. Names like "Bugs Bunny" and members of the Dallas Cowboys football team were among them.
    3. Let's remember Democrats are well versed in this as also. They're the ones that released W's 25 year old DUI arrest in an attempt to tank him. Oliver Stone has inflicted his latest movie on us for the same reason.

    4. Yes and I'm praying for a repeat this time too.
    5. If Obama wins the Democrats will control all three branches and have a supermajority. There is nothing the GOP can do to keep them from running riot over the American people.

  5. Hey Susie,
You are SOOOOOOO RIGHT ON! I am terrified that the repubs will pull some dirty trick to get the office. They've already shown how dirty they can be with their attacks and smears and flat out lies. And don't even get me started on that evil Palin woman... shudddddder!
    PS: your pictures are awesome!

  8. Susie, I'm with you on every point.

Long before the primaries, I heard Michelle Obama give a speech. I didn't know who she was, but I was impressed with what she said.

Then I started listening to Barack. Then I wondered whether he'd be a better pick than McCain. Then McCain picked Palin as his running mate.

That's when my personal landslide started to fall in Barack's direction.

  9. It's perhaps best that you stay in Saudi Arabia feeling as you do. As usual the press is biased and the liberals want a free ride. Please do not try to impose your political views on us.

  10. Susie,

It my be best if you lived your life out in Saudi Arabia. I've read many of your comments about the USA and feel if you are that unhappy with us unless of course your leftwing takes over you'll be happier where you are.
Maybe I should just stay home and "share the wealth" as per Obama stated. Where did he get his wealth from and his education paid for? Amazing that no one questions that. His associations are questionable but also that's "okay".

I'd rather trust in someone who puts country first. You are scared of McCain I am terrified if Obama gets in.

  11. I feel your spirit here working side by side with me for the betterment of this country. I can't believe there haven't been any indictments!!! I told a bigot to "Shut the f.... up!" the other day because he was making negative remarks about foreigners. I will not be silent anymore.

  12. Hi MamaK -
I get annoyed at all the nastiness and lies myself too, and I know it's not just one sided. I'm from Arizona and 10-20 years ago, I liked McCain myself. But he totally lost my respect when he sold his soul to the Bush machine just so he'd have a shot at the presidency. I strongly feel the country need change and it won't come from the Republicans. Please tell your hubby Thumbs Up from me! Thanks for your comment - I always value your input. You have to do what you think is right.

    Hi Tara!
I believe the same things as you. I lived in Florida during the last two presidential elections and neither time did I feel my vote counted. I also believe the Electoral College should be done away with and the presidency should be decided by the popular vote, but that's a discussion for another day. Thanks for your two cents!

Hi Anonymous - Wow - Good for you! Obama needs an overwhelming victory and every vote is important. Have a safe flight!

  13. Hi Anonymous #2 -
    1. Obama's comment about spreading the wealth refers to taxing the wealthiest Americans who have not been paying their fair share of taxes because of Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy. The most prosperous that Americans have been in recent memory was during the Clinton administration.
    2. While John McCain has attacked the liberal US community group Acorn for alleged voter registration fraud, the Republican party continues to employ operatives facing fraud accusations including one who faces criminal perjury charges.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/oct/22/uselections2008-republicans
    3. I can hardly wait to see Oliver Stone's new movie "W" and I'm betting that it's a lot more fair and balanced than FOX News.
    4. I firmly believe that Bush stole the election in 2000. I knew something was wrong when I was placing my vote. Is this the kind of America you want? One that doesn't represent all of its people fairly?
    5. Exactly who has been "running riot" over whom for the last 8 years? Are you kidding me with your response to #5? I feel raped by the current administration. And if you don't, where have you been?

  14. Hi Monica -

  15. Hi Anonymous #3 & #4 (same person maybe?) - First off, this is MY blog, not yours, and I will write about the topics I choose to.
Second, I am still a US citizen and I have exercised my right to vote in every election since I was old enough to vote.
Third, You're damn right I'm unhappy with the direction the US has gone since Bush Jr took office... Me and 75% of all Americans.
Fourth, the liberals do not want nor do they get a free ride. However we do have compassion for those who are less fortunate, and that's something that conservatives lack.
Fifth, both Barack Obama and his wife paid for their educations thru scholarships and student loans, incurring debts which were not fully paid off until many years later. They were finally able to retire their student loan debts from the revenue derived from Barack's two best selling books. http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/money.asp
Sixth, where I live my life should be of no concern to you. It is my decision, not yours.
And P.S. - Writing as ANONYMOUS is a cowardly way of saying things that you are really ashamed of saying in the first place. NO MORE ANONYMOUS REMARKS WILL BE PUBLISHED ON THIS POST. ONLY COMMENTS WITH NAMES WILL BE ACCEPTED. AND I CAN DO THAT BECAUSE THIS IS MY BLOG, NOT YOURS.

  16. To anonymous who asked why Hispanic's in south fl vote repub... easy to answer... Majority of them are Catholic. While there are some Catholic democrats, I know because I was raised by one, there is still the issue of that party tends to side on the opposite side of our beliefs in important matters.

  17. Hi CJ -
Thank you. I felt I needed to speak up too. I would be down at the polls volunteering if I were there in the states. Voter fraud must be stopped.
And thank you for not tolerating prejudice any longer. The US is and always has been a nation of immigrants. I don't know why people keep forgetting that.

  18. I'm living overseas right now but just voted. OBAMA 08 :)

The idiots at the florida election office didn't send me my absentee ballot in what I consider a sufficient amount of time to mail it back so I was forced to fax it which means it's no longer secret. Hope they didn't throw it away or blacklist me when they saw who I voted for (J/K) :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. My sentiments exactly -- you really hit the nail on the head with this post and your follow up comments.

I'm biting my nails to the quick waiting for this election to be over with -- it's just making me so nervous, and on so many levels....

I recently read 'The End of America' by Naomi Wolf -- what an eye opener that was. Plus the book was just recently made into a documentary movie, that can be watched online for free: http://myamericaproject.org/ . Personally, I'm terrified that if our administration and leadership doesn't change, we'll find ourselves continuing to slide down that slippery slope of gradually losing (giving up?) our constitutional freedoms/rights/privileges -- all in the guise of "keeping us safe" (uh huh, riiiiight)....

(And as to Latinos in South Florida voting GOP -- my understanding has always been that it is because so many are of Cuban background and culture, and as such are particularly sensitive to the upheaval and turbulence of Cuban political history/circumstance, a big influence toward voting more to the right than the left....)

  20. Uggh. I'm sorry you're getting comments like that. Honestly I was expecting it since it's a political post & glad there haven't been more, but it's still wrong. Everyone has their right to their opinion & shouldn't be bashed like that for it.

& update on my situation... The night before I go vote (LOL) I finally made a decision. For some silly reason I hadn't thought to see who else was running until tonight & saw that the guy I hoped would win republican nomination (Allen Keyes) is running Independent. I'm not naive enough to think he'll win, but still... I'm debating whether or not to put it in my next blog post though lol.

  21. Hi Tulip -
I'm glad you got to vote and made the extra effort to do so. Hopefully your vote will be counted fairly!

    Hi Patience -
I am so anxious and on edge about this election, I can hardly stand it! Thanks so much for the book recommendation and the movie link. I'll be sure to watch it.
And I totally agree with you about your fears if the direction the US is going doesn't change. It's quite scary to think about.

Hi MamaK - Thanks. I knew I was sticking my neck out with this post, but the election has me so riled up, I just had to and with that comes a certain amount of people who aren't going to agree with me, and that's ok. But to tell me where I should live, that's just a bit too much. One of the greatest things about America is freedom of speech, whether we agree with another person's views or not. I'm glad you made a decision that you are happy with (and I'm glad it's not a vote for McCain!) LOL!

  22. I think you are absoluetely right!!! The USA is a blinkered as it says other countries are, completely alienated and disliked even by so-called allies. It is about time it had some fresh blood and a new voice. Just the fact Obama is mixed race is in his favour! Too many of the same families rule over and over again...a monarchy by another name!

  29. wow, I am so glad that this post is getting such a good reception. I have read all the responces and I feel most for the conflicted 'Mama Kalila'. My mother is exactly the same way and I am proud to have discussed with her her apprehensions.

My mother voted for Obama in the primaries and I cried. I cried because Barack represents to me the beginning of a proud new american century.

I have seen this country drug through the gutter these past 8 years. There area a few reasons I am not voting Republican:
    -Katrina
    -Bin laden
    -Iraq ("Mission Accomplished")
    -Afghanistan
-the Economy (led astray by a failed economic policy of Republican laissez-faire policies)
-Taxes (trickle down economics is as failed an economic policy as communism, or should i feel sorry for someone who makes more than 250,000$ a year?)
    -Rendition
    -Abu Gharib
    -The Geneva Conventions
    -The Federal Torture Act
    -Habius Corpus
    -Warrentless wiretaps
-"The executive branch has unlimited power in wartime" interpretation of the VP office.
    -Guantanamo
-$300 billion surplus to a consistent $800 billion deficit.
    -"Pre-emption"
    -WMD's
    -Yellow Cake
    -Enron
    -De-Bath'ification
    -disbanding the Iraqi army
-The Worlds Peacekeeper to the Worlds bully.
    -No-bid contracts
    -Homophobia
    -Civil Rights
    -Kyoto Treaty
    -Cronyism
    -$3.00 Gas prices
    -No child left behind
-Palin, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bremmer, Katherine Harris, Scooter Libby

Now it would be unfair to think that McCain would not continue these policies. The most important example: was against the bush tax-cuts (when he was an ACTUAL maverick), now he wants to make them permanent.

Barack Obama represents Hope and actual Change. I am proud of my country, so proud that I know we can survive F-tards like G.W.
    -Healthcare
-a moderate, Clinton style tax system.
    -Our world standing
    -a reasonable end to Iraq
-a fundimental change in Energy policy
    -EDUCATION
-The ECONOMY (the 90's were no fluke of timing and neither were the 2000's= they are results of good policy and bad policy)

and finally in a selfish sense... there will be children that will grow up with a black president... racism is in this country could become as irrelevant as cannibalism.

It starts with us and starts with our vote. You can vote for same-old-same-old or you can vote for change.

    Sincerely,
    Cory K. Johnson

  31. Susie - I have found this blog invaluable in the last few months. My husband and I are moving to the Kingdom November 15th from the US. He is American and I am Canadian. We will be living in one of 'those compounds' you have referred to in past posts. I have been avidly reading you since this was a possibility for me. Your experiences and perspective have erased my fear of the unknown and injected a sense of excitement in all of this. I most especially have enjoyed your photos. Thank you.

  32. Obama is not the man to be in the White House. I'm not 100% for McCain but at least we know what he is all about. No one knows the true Barack. I don't want my tax dollars to take care of people who want handouts. I do not want my tax dollars to bailout individuals who never should have gotten a home loan in the first place. I do not want to pull out of Iraq prematurely and have another Viet Nam on our hands. No, I don't want anyone else to lose their life in any war but pulling out now is not an option. The drive by media does not report the truth or question enough things that Obama has said and his associations with questionable characters but they are more than happy to report on where Palin is getting her clothes. Go figure!

    ReplyDelete
  33. It always amazes me that people will label someone who speaks out about or voices their opinion over the government as Un-American. And that they should just leave the country. They seem to forget that is what actually makes us American.
The idea that you can speak out against the government, say what you think is wrong with it, what you want to see changed, what you are unhappy with is a right given to us by our founding fathers and something we should not only embrace but it's something we don't do enough of.
As Americans we have the right to dissolve our government at any time we choose. If we just sit there saying "Oh yeah, they're doing great. Just leave them alone you commie bastard." and turn a blind eye we are anything but American.
We have a president that has the lowest approval rating ever. It's not because liberals want to run riot. What utter bullshit.
I don't think Obama will be perfect. Personally I think anyone who makes it this far politically in a nation of our size isn't going to be totally honest and trustworthy. But McCain sided to long with Bush for my liking. I am convinced with him in office we will have another four yearsof failure.
Eight years ago I would have voted for McCain. In that time a bitterness has grown in him and not to mention the idea of a puppy-killing beauty queen being a stroke away from the Oval Office doesn't set well with me.
For those out there though who call me Un-American for pointing out the flaws in my leaders or find me Un-American for speaking out against the government, while exercising my CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS I will just remind you what Ben Franklin said:
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety"

If we give up our liberty to speak out against those who are in government then we do not deserve to be American anymore.

And for those on here who will just label me a "liberal" or a "democrat" or whatever category they want to try to pigeon-hole me into I will also quote Oscar Levant, who so succinctly told the difference between our two parties:
"The only difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is that the Democrats allow the poor to be corrupt, too."
    Amen.

Sorry for joining in so late, but I needed to get in my comment, FWIW.

"We need the kind of landslide that will give Barack a huge mandate."

You mean like the landslide victory the Dems had in the Congress two years ago? What ever happened to that mandate??

The reality is that no matter who wins or loses, the corporatocracy will continue to rule. The business elites are behind both parties. Obama and McCain are two sides of the same coin.

Chomsky said it best: All this elevated rhetoric of change by Obama will die down and find him returning to standard centrist Democratic policies.

The only change you'll find is under your couch. :-(

  43. Susie--
I really enjoy reading your blog. We too live in Saudi--Riyadh. I have to disagree and say Vote for McCain. Americans don't realize how liberal Obama is. They don't realize that he's not going to be able to pay for anything that he has "promised." Don't forget the Democrats aren't so "pure" either--both sides have slung mud.
I hope McCain wins--at least we know he's been tested and has wisdome that comes with age.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Susie--
I love reading your blog. But a vote for Obama is a vote in the wrong direction. McCain has the will and wisdom to lead the US. While Bush hasn't been perfect--at least he wasn't impeached like Bill Clinton was.
I think it's so funny when people say that the Republicans "stole" any election.
What's even funnier is that the Democrats took over the House and Senate--and still can't get anything accomplished--maybe Obama should have stayed so he could actually accomplish something and show he has leadership.
Obama looks nice in his suits (wonder how much they cost), is young, has energy and gives great speeches--too bad there's no substance to the speeches or his latest infomercial.
This has been an exciting election season--too long--but exciting.

This is the same thing that is happening with Obama, gross generalizations and racial fear.

I am glad you are voting for Obama Susie. It is time for change, not fear. There are a lot of misinformation and uninformed voters out there. One more day and we will know. 47. History was made last nite and here in Washington DC there were whistles, hoorahs, horns beeping, an overall jubulation that our America is finally growing to "become" the country she was created to be.

I was at a local diner last nite for a short time, grabbing a quick sandwich for dinner and watching the returns with others.

There were statements of "the election was stolen for the past eight years" and I responded that if Al Gore and then Kerry had won, the events that had transpired to create an opportunity for Barack Obama to run, may not have been in place. That things happen for a reason sometimes. Sometimes the economy has to slow, sometimes the Ramadan has to be felt by a greater majority of the populace.

There is a narration from the play The Fantastiks spoken by a somewhat elusive character known as "El Gallo" - he begines "The Curious Paradox which no one can explain ..."

Stepping back to consider global and historic events of the past, the economic, philanthropic, and ecumenical trends of the future ... one can only pause in awe that Allah knows best.

Consider if you will these past years as a testing ground, a ground of preparation for the great things we as a human race can do for ourselves and for posterity. The opportunities presenting themselves for "redemption" and a chance to start getting it right for all the right reasons.

When I first heard Barack Obama open his mouth and begin to speak, at the end of it, I knew he was going to be the next president of the United States.

And we have to help him, as "We the People" we have to remember the opening words of the Declaration of Independence that "When in the course of human events ..." we have to remember Thomas Jefferson's 1801 Inaugural Address when he spoke:

"...Let us, then, fellow-citizens, unite with one heart and one mind. Let us restore to social intercourse that harmony and affection without which liberty and even life itself are but dreary things. And let us reflect that, having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled and suffered, we have yet gained little if we countenance a political intolerance as despotic, as wicked, and capable of as bitter and bloody persecutions..."

Let us also reflect that we choose to banish from our land that racial intolerance, class intolerance, social intolerance, that we want for each other the same good that we want for ourselves.

Yes, it's a new day in the United States of America. And as I cast my ballot, my vote yesterday for Barack Obama, I was heartened in the resolve of the American people and remembered my way back great-grandfather who lost so much because he believed in the exercise in democracy and signed a document in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776.

God Willing ... we rise from the ashes into which we've cast ourselves through complaicency. We rise from "business as usual" and grasp the hand-hold that never puts us down.

We cannot sit still. We cannot not engage in the recreation of America. We must help her up, reunite her, bring her in so that she's no longer like the painting "The Derelicta" ...

I am so very proud of my country. And am beginning to see us, having awakened, to finally emerge, and walk.

"...The day will come when the child huddled and frightened
In the street In the field,
In the factory, in us all

    Will stand.

The spark that was once lost
    Will be found again.
    It will become a flame
And the flame will become a golden fire, that burns with strength and compassion, with peace and resolve.

The once shattered hopes will be molded into a new way of life,
    A new direction,
    Through a new awakening."

We all move forward - together
